UW-IT is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW.  Communications Infrastructure within UW-IT, partners with customers, UW-IT divisions, and vendors to provide technology solutions. This unit facilitates the delivery of UW-ITs networking and communication services, coordinates voice and data projects for new and renovated buildings, focuses on emerging technologies and initiatives, and collaborates with customers to find strategic solutions to meet their needs. This unit also coordinates and develops new initiatives for inclusion in UW-ITs service offerings.

The Network Specialist will is responsible for technical work to meet customer expectations on the installations for all scopes of work from single installations to new building networks as they relate to the Layer 1 level support and; Voice digital, analog and VoIP converged installations at multiple on-campus (UW Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma) and off-campus locations in the Puget Sound Region associated with the 3 campuses and UW Medicine.

Relevant technologies include: Avaya systems including service Management Console (SMC), dial tone provisioning systems, voice over IP (VoIP), T-1, Ethernet TCP/IP and converged network applications.

The position supports and is actively involved in UW-IT voice and network service planning to provide communications services to the UW, UW Medicine, and UW-affiliated locations in the Puget Sound and other State of Washington locations where service is provided by the UW.

Coordinate complex communications projects, complex dial tone and telephone system conversions, and communication infrastructure installations and network node recables. Provide internal technical and troubleshooting support for UW-IT campus and off-campus voice projects and services.

Design, install and support Infrastructure communications cable systems and applications involving PBX systems, voice over IP (VoIP), T-1, Ethernet TCP/IP and converged networks. Provide technical support and troubleshooting on systems and applications for the Customer Service and Support staff.

Identify and solve operational problems. Consult with local, regional, and national service providers to facilitate problem resolution within the UW communications network (including off campus and affiliated UW and UW Medicine sites).

Assist in the evaluation and beta testing of new products. Conduct final acceptance testing of new products, systems, and services.  Assist peer Network technicians and Support staff for deployment of new products, systems, tools, and services.

This position works with the UW-IT Network group and other organizations involved in providing voice and data services; including external service providers such as CenturyLink (formerly Qwest), Avaya, and Zayo.

This position affects many critical customers and services, including UW Medicine and K-20.  It requires coordination with other UW-IT units, many UW Medicine customers including but not limited to UW Medicine Facilities, UW ITS Help Desk, UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics, and the UW Medicine Contact Center.  It may require work with outside contractors and building managers to identify and solve operational problems. Consultation with local, regional, and national service providers is also required to facilitate problem resolution within the UW communications network.


REQUIREMENTS


  1. Bachelors degree in Telecommunications, Networking, Computer Science, Engineering or related field or experience.


  2. Two years of experience with basic digital telephony concepts; experience troubleshooting digital switching and/or digital transport problems.


  3. Experience working with communications service providers to troubleshoot digital transport and switching services, and with clients and support staff to resolve network related problems.


  4. Experience with service coordination and problem resolution in a communications network environment.


  5. Experience working with telecommunications vendors, customers and support staff to resolve network related problems.


  6. Working knowledge of Ethernet link layer protocols, standards, and practices for both LAN wiring and campus plants.


  7. Experience working with customers to troubleshoot connectivity problems.


  8. Working knowledge of database and spreadsheet applications (such as Access, Microsoft Word and Excel).


  9. Demonstrated interpersonal skills, as well as excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision, both independently and as part of a team.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Must be comfortable working in confined areas and communications closets.

    Must be experienced with working in construction environments and their safety requirements.

    Must be willing to adjust core work schedule as needed for project based work.
    Must be able to operate a state vehicle on a daily basis, which requires a valid drivers license recognized by the State of Washington. It may, on occasion, be necessary to perform duties assigned to this person outside of normal business hours. It may also be necessary to travel on weekends in the performance of assigned duties.

    This is an essential position and is required to report to work when UW suspends operations.
