UW Facilities manages the Universitys buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.
Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations has an outstanding opportunity for a Power Plant Control Technician Lead to lead and work with Power Plant Control Technicians and other journey workers with related skills to perform journey-level work in support of the operation, maintenance, repair, and alteration of the pneumatic, electronic, and electrical controls of the University of Washington Power Plant. This work requires special skills in instrument and control equipment maintenance and a working knowledge of power plant operations and electrical distribution systems. May respond to emergency calls.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Lead and assign work to journey-level power plant control technicians and power plant electricians, for work related to the operation, maintenance, repair and alteration of systems within the power plant
Schedule maintenance and repair work in a continuously operating power plant with a full understanding of the impact of the work on the operations of the plant
Coordinate with contractors working in the power plant facility
Troubleshoot and develop solutions to repair and maintenance problems on complex power plant systems such as the 5000-kW steam turbine generator, 425 psi 650-degree superheated steam distribution system, 550 psi high pressure feed water system, and multiple 2000 Ton capacity centrifugal chillers relative to the supporting instrumentation and controls
Identify and enforce safe work practices within the shop, review jobs as necessary to identify potential work hazards and requirements for proper personal protective equipment
Develop methods and procedures to be followed by assigned personnel
Read, review and comment on plans, blueprints and sketches for plant upgrades and renovations
Order shop and project parts and supplies as required
Assist manager/supervisor with identifying and resolving performance issues and evaluating worker performance
May assist with employment interviews and make hiring recommendations
Attend meetings and training sessions as required
Perform journey duties of the trade, may perform work in other trade skills, perform related duties as required
Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements include:
One year of full-time experience as a journey-level control technician, or equivalent trade skill
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required
Additional Requirements include:
Must be conversant with ABB Harmony, Composer and Symphony Plus DCS systems along with Allen-Bradley RSView, FactoryTalk, PLC5, and ControlLogix systems
Have knowledge of and understand safe work practices and policies
Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Five or more years as an instrument/control technician in a power generation or industrial facility
Conversant with EPA regulations 40 CFR Part 60 with CEMS and COMS analyzers along with support equipment and regulation testing, maintenance, repair and reporting
Be able to work with equipment that uses TCIP Modbus, RTU Modbus and HART protocols
Conversant with Microsoft operating systems, MS Server programs and MS Office.
