A Day in the Life
Located at the Medtronic office in the Seaport District of Boston, MA, as a Surgeon Console Software Engineer you will lead and/or participate in the software development efforts in the Software Center of Excellence of the Surgical Robotics Organization. You will work on developing next generation surgeon console to enable surgeons to drive surgical robotic arm to perform surgeries and change patients' life. You will work in a fast-paced and highly regulated environment with a group of highly talented software engineers, collaborating with cross functional teams to develop and design surgeon console next generation, complete requirements definition, design, code implementation, unit test, and software and system verification and validation. You will also participate in Agile activities including but not limited to (Increment Planning, Sprint Planning, stand-ups...etc.) and you might act as scrum master or product owner based on project needs.

You will:
Build and develop world class software for the surgeon console using C++.
Work with different communication protocols including but not limited to DDS, I2C, SPI, RS232 and TCP/IP.
Communicate with different hardware components, embedded systems, and motor controllers.
Cross function collaboration with manufacturing and production.
Troubleshooting and debugging issues that are SW/HW related.
Lead process improvement initiatives to reduce release time and improve the overall program efficiency.
Coach and mentor other junior software engineers.
Participate in the documentation of the software including architecture and design detail, unit testing, anomaly tracking and reports.
Define design gaps and areas of improvement.
Lead new product development initiatives.
Define and review software requirements, Participate in design review and architecture runway
Cross function team collaboration with our SW partners, including integration team, testing team, Quality, System V&V...etc.
Follow Medical device regulation (IEC 62304, FDA...etc.)
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree required
Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience
Nice to Have
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a technical discipline: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical engineering, or related fields. Master's or Ph.D. degree in related discipline is preferred.
The ideal candidate must have any or all the following related experience:
Deep knowledge of object-oriented design and Modern C++ language.
Hands-on experience in developing, debugging, and troubleshooting remotely and on targets using modern C++ 11 or later.
Deep Knowledge with RTOS, and Real time application.
Deep knowledge with embedded SW design, bootloader, Firmware and SW/HW interfaces.
Experience with low level interface and communication protocols: RS232, UART, SPI, Modbus
Experience in software architecture design, writing design documents, creating flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts.
Hands on experience with Motor-controller and low-level control technologies.
Experience with different network communication protocols TCP/IP, DDS, UDP... etc.
Passione in solving complex issues and diving deep to understand the root cause.
Understanding and appreciation of SDLC process and tools (e.g. JIRA, Bitbucket, Stash, Confluence, JAMA, Git, CMake.)
Hand-on experience with Windows OS, Real Time Operation System (RTOS), QNX (x86 and/or Arm target), Linux and/or other Real Time Operating System, including related IDEs, SDKs, and DDKs.
Experience in the test-driven development methodology and unit test.
Experience leading technical design activities.
Ability to distill software requirements from system requirements.
Experience in providing guidance, coaching, and training to other software engineers in the software development technologies and best practices.
Experience in relevant scripting languages Python, Matlab and bash is a plus.
Familiarity with Scaled Agile and/or SAFe for software development practices, is a plus.
Experience in software development in medical devices industry, is a plus.
Experience or basic understanding of surgical robotics is a plus.
Experience leading software development process improvement activities.
Hands on experience with Software and Hardware embedded development using C++.
Experience working with highly regulated environment following ISO 13485 and 14971, GMP guidelines, FDA regulations, Software as medical devices, and IEC 62304.
Experience performing risk management analysis of software ideally using SW FMEA techniques
Experience working with the global/multi-development sites environment is a plus.
Experience acting as Scrum Master or Product Owner is a plus.
Working Conditions:
Work-from-Home and Standard Office setting in Boston, MA. Some limited travel may be required.
