The Global Innovation Exchange is a collaboration between universities and industry partners from around the world focused on developing leaders in innovation. Located in a 100,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Bellevues growing Spring District, is just 10 miles from the UW campus and was specifically designed to support the Master of Science in Technology Innovation program. The GIX building, named in honor of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, features design studios, an incubation space, electronics prototyping labs, presentation spaces and a well-equipped makerspace.
We are seeking a versatile connected devices/IoT prototyping expert for a part-time (50%) to full-time Prototyping Labs Tech / Connected Devised Specialist (Instructional Technician 2) to maintain lab resources and provide technical support for courses and projects in the MS in Technology Innovation program Connected Devices track. This position reports to the Prototyping Labs Manager. With limited supervision, the individual in this position must monitor and respond to hardware and software events, operate and maintain specialized equipment, and monitor student use of the Labs and resources for the Connected Devices track.
Specific duties are outlined below:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position requires strong technical skills and familiarity with the setup, operation, and maintenance of conventional and advanced prototyping equipment, mechanical systems, and computer interfaces. The type of equipment in the Labs is constantly changing and the successful candidate will feel comfortable orienting themselves to, diagnosing, and troubleshooting new and unfamiliar systems. This position is the primary accountable staff member for 3D printing, laser cutting, and other hardware prototyping equipment.
In addition to technical skills the Instructional Technician must have strong interpersonal skills including both written and verbal communication, the ability to work well with people with diverse backgrounds and abilities, and the ability to work well independently and on small teams.
Manage HW/SW Lab Resources
Lab management: Develop and maintain resources to support the connected devices lab and related processes for staffing, sign-up and training for remote and in-person usage, 3D file submissions and part processing, maintenance, safety, inventory, etc. Maintain, track, inventory, and coordinate the ordering of consumable computer and office supplies necessary to sustain the connected devices lab. Document all related processes.
Equipment maintenance: Independently make decisions related to maintenance of equipment. Report, record, and escalate problem events to the appropriate leader, faculty member, or vendor. Monitor and react to issues with hardware and system management tools. Operate, maintain, and monitor hardware devices (3D printers and laser cutters) and the supporting software tools to ensure the readiness of connected devices technology. 5%
Purchasing: Apply knowledge of technical specs, vendors, use within curriculum, and other program needs to prioritize purchases and make decisions about the acquisition of new equipment; manage spending and tracking of expenditures on course budgets and relevant Prototyping Lab sub-budgets, ensure that new purchases are tested and set up properly.
Special projects manager: Serve as a technical resource for connected devices program faculty and staff who deliver lab courses and launch projects. Apply knowledge of programs curricular goals and connected devices equipment to test lab exercises and coordinate or purchase services, supplies, or equipment needed to maintain the lab or support lab courses. Independently make decisions to solve problems and develop technical infrastructure, resources, and guidance.
Training & Student Support
In Class Student Support: Participate in scheduled course sessions and be available during open office hours for technical support for connected devices launch project teams. Applying technical knowledge of hardware and software systems, and understanding of the curriculum and course goals to provide technical advice to instructor, coordinate with Labs Manager to provide appropriate equipment and resources for program success. Provide operational and safety training to Teaching Assistants, Reader/Graders, and/or Technical Assistants assigned to the course.
In Labs Student Support: Maintain regular scheduled office hours, outside of scheduled course meetings, to provide individual and small groups project consulting and on-demand teaching/training in technical areas relevant to connected devices projects. Utilize connected devices and program expertise to provide plain-language explanations of connected devices concepts to students in a way that reinforces program goals, helps them apply technology appropriately, and encourages independent problem solving.
Program support: Participate as requested in critiques, launch project events, team meetings to give feedback on student projects and prototypes, and help improve technical services and infrastructure provided by the connected devices lab. Participate as requested in project sponsor meetings, speaker series, or other launch- or Consortium-related activities related to the connected devices track. Lead development and delivery of orientation training for connected devices program track and creation of kits (if necessary) for connected devices program students.
Supervision: Supervise 1-2 student employees during open-Labs shifts.
Requirements include:
Bachelor's Degree in a specific instructional area
OR two years of college course work in major study area (i.e., engineering, technology, or related field AND two years' experience providing technical support and training in a field related to IoT, connected devices, physical prototyping, electrical, mechanical engineering, or hardware and/or software development
or equivalent combination of education and experience
Additional Requirements include:

Work may require lifting, bending and transporting of items of up to 30 pounds or driving.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Masters degree in engineering or related field
Knowledge of and experience with 3D printing and 3D printer maintenance/troubleshooting.
Knowledge of and experience with laser cutting and laser cutter maintenance/troubleshooting.
Knowledge of and experience with electronics and benchtop electronics equipment (oscilloscope, signal generator, multimeter, etc.)
Knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, the Arduino programming language and embedded systems (e.g. STM32 feather, ESP3)
Knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, the Python programming language.
Ability to write and document procedures clearly, contribute to technical and educational resources such as manuals, videos, web pages, and present informally to groups and individual guests of the Labs
Experience working with international students
Familiarity with current and emerging hardware prototyping and connected devices technologies.
Familiarity and experience with design development of hardware systems.
Familiarity with computer vision, machine learning, HTML, and Javascript
Experience with UW Canvas Learning Management System
