Description

Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) seeks a talented and goal-oriented individual to join our team in NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). The selected candidate will work closely with contractor and NASA scientists to provide technical support and scientific programming for the development, implementation, testing and documentation of GMAO modeling and data assimilation systems. The selected candidate will also contribute to the presentation of scientific results at conferences, workshops and in peer-reviewed publications.

The selected candidate will focus their efforts on the evaluation of the ocean assimilation system, especially evaluating the impact of satellite and in situ observing systems on ocean data assimilation and ocean reanalyses. The selected candidate will also develop and maintain HTML-based software, available validation data, and diagnostics of performance to assess the current state of the ocean climate.

Qualifications

PhD (preferred) in atmospheric sciences or physical oceanography, or related MS with 2+ years of experience.

• Expertise in satellite ocean observations (e.g., altimetry, and salinity), and in situ observations (e.g., Argo, CTD, XBT, Mooring)

• Proficiency in scientific programming using Fortran, Python, visualization, shell scripting, and collaborative software such as git

• Knowledge of different data formats e.g., netcdf and experience with scientific data analysis skills (such as correlation, root mean square error, etc.) and data management and manipulation of large datasets

• Excellent communication skills
