Job Description

The Actuarial Assistant/Associate will play a key role in the daily actuarial functions of John Hancock. They will be a member of the Actuarial Development Program (ADP) and complete various work assignments/projects as directed by the manager. Students will need Excel skills and will gain knowledge in various computer programs (including RStudio, GGY Axis, Python).

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Update a variety of departmental spreadsheets/templates, and compile, analyze, and report the results of quarterly, yearly, or ad hoc projects as assigned by the manager

  • Provide meaningful analysis & interpretation of actuarial results and trends in data

  • Communicate results to the manager, department, and/or senior leaders via email or more formal presentations, as needed

  • Provide support to more senior actuarial staff as needed

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field

  • Actively pursuing SOA exams

    • Minimum 1 SOA exam passed

    • Will be required to write two exams per year

  • Experience:

    • Actuarial Assistant: 0-2 years

    • Actuarial Associate: 1-4 years

  • Superior aptitude for computer applications, including MS Excel/VBA, MS Access, Python, RStudio, GGY Axis, etc. While extensive experience with each of these programs is not a requirement, a strong aptitude & willingness to learn is necessary

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (Effective communication and interpersonal skills to deal with both technical and non-technical audiences; ability to explain concepts and results effectively)

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to take ownership of projects and drive to completion
