Main Purpose of role

To adequately display the knowledge and ability to carry out the approved tests to comply with the department objective.

Applying high quality scientific techniques in the microbiological analysis of raw ingredients, in-process production samples, finished product testing, and environmental monitoring, to ensure that all products manufactured are fit for use.

To be able to work with fellow technicians, with a high degree of motivation, attention to important details with clear communication to all team members. This is important due to the high degree of responsibility and working within a small group where each person is heavily relied-upon.

The Assistant I Microbiology reports directly to the Lab Supervisor/FLL and must be able to work with minimal supervision. The incumbent is responsible for complying with applicable Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), FDA, USDA, OSHA and Abbott regulations, policies, procedures or guidelines. A serious error could result in a Corporate compliance observation, in a FDA product recall, batch destruction or a serious health risk.


Main Responsibilities

Conduct product testing per procedures.

Perform environmental testing for micro presence in the production environment.

Conduct raw ingredient testing.

Complete appropriate documentation, audit and release of commodities or products.

Complete housekeeping responsibilities including autoclave, waste disposal, general laboratory sanitation, etc..

Ability to prepare media for test procedures.

Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) performance and compliance through active participation and support of Abbott’s EHS Program.


Education level

High School Diploma / GED plus 1 year of appropriate college lab studies and 1 year of college mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry or calculus), plus 2 years of laboratory experience or 4 years’ experience in a food or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.


Associates Degree (± 13 years)    Science related with at least 1 year of appropriate college lab studies and 1 year of college mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry or

calculus), plus 1 year of related laboratory experience or 2 years’ experience in a food

or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment

              

Bachelors Degree (± 16 years)     Science related with at least 1 year of appropriate college lab studies and 1 year of college mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry or

calculus).            



Experience/ Background

1. Ability to follow verbal instructions, follow written directions, prepare simple reports, read and record gauge and display readings.

2. Mathematics knowledge and basic statistical comprehension.

4. This individual will recognize and report method procedure problems, out-of-specification

conditions and report to supervision.

5. Must be able to identify issues with test methods.

6. Ability to recognize potential threats to product quality.

7. Responsible for detecting and correcting documentation errors.

8. Strong teamwork and ability to work with plant personnel in other departments.
