The Operations Innovation Distinguished Engineer position has the responsibility and authority for applying, executing, and coaching the implementation of Design, Reliability, Manufacturability (DRM) / Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies into the Operations Innovation New Product Development organization. This position is responsible for global standardization and implementation across 20 Operating Units and 67 Manufacturing sites.
The Distinguished Engineer is responsible for setting a Technical Rigor Review Strategy in Operations New Product Development. The candidate will ensure there is a mature feedback mechanism throughout the development lifecycle. The primary measure of success is the release of mature, high yielding, stable, and robust processes for manufacture of implantable medical devices. A successful person in this role will be able to identify when DFSS tools should be applied and be able to teach others to apply the tools. Tools include, but are not limited to conjoint analysis, TRIZ, design thinking, P-Diagrams, DoE, QFD, Pugh Analysis, Regression, MSA, VSM, capability, reliability prediction, and multiple problem solving methodologies.
This role will be part of the Enterprise Operations Innovation PDP office for strategic initiatives and will have the responsibility for implementing the strategy in partnership with Core Team Operations Representatives (CTORs) and with Manufacturing sites. This position will also partner with the broader Operations Innovation team to understand what the Manufacturing Floor of the Future will be and partner with Technology Development Centers and Operating Units to ensure the 3 strategies converge and develop a timetable for convergence.
Autonomy:A Distinguished Engineer is a recognized technical authority and innovator. They will influence across large teams and multiple Operating Units to align strategy and standardize Technical Rigor outputs. The role typically interfaces with experienced professionals and senior leadership. Interactions may be individual or group. This person is expected to turn the department and Enterprise Ops PDP strategy into a commercial reality by developing, communicating, and implementing tactical plans to achieve business results. Receives assignments that are objective oriented with the expectation that this person will determine specifics.
Organizational Impact: The Distinguished Engineer will initiate long-range programs or projects to meet the assigned objectives and balance time, cost, and return on investments. This role will have direct impact for multiple Operating Units (OU) and is expected to form collaborative partnerships with Operating Units and Manufacturing Sites. This position will be a change agent to create long-range vision with implementation plans to achieve launch stability and financial results.
**A Day in the Life**
**DRM Strategy and Tactical Implementation**
+ Ops in PDP Interface between Enterprise Operations, Manufacturing Sites and OUs - collaborate on strategy and lead OU implementation
+ Stable Launch Strategy identify critical factors then design and implement controls, practices, or procedures to strive toward flawless launch for disruptive, new platform, and iteration type products.
+ Manufacturing Standard Architecture (VSM) Support the creation, maintenance, application, use, and analysis of value stream maps bridging product development and released product production.
+ PMO solutions are expected to solve complex, incompletely defined problems and be simple to apply practices or solutions. When and where possible, solutions should include automation, use of IT tools, and be standard across the enterprise.
+ Develop prediction models that will accurately reflect time to market, time to stability, and serve as leading indicator metrics.
+ Benchmark external companies and best-in-class industry practices and bring them into Medtronic.
**Technical Rigor**
+ Maintain tactical execution and usability for the CTOR Scorecard Master. This includes, but is not limited to scorecard front end interface management, refreshing data, implementing changes guided by the Enterprise Ops PDP office, working with CTORs for interpretation and accuracy, and training on how to use scorecards
+ Create Power BI scorecards and confirm accurate data transfer
+ Organize technical reviews for projects in alignment with the department strategy.
+ Provide product-specific technical rigor coaching, mentoring and guidance to the CTOR
+ Participate, with active engagement, in RD, Technology, and Operations Technical Review meetings.
+ Provide situational coaching and DRM process guidance to project teams and sites for unique needs.
**DRM Master Black Belt**
+ Coordinate Teach DRM classes with the community of other Certified Master Black Belts
+ Maintain DRM training dashboard alignment
+ Coach GB, BB, MBB candidates, Operations candidates are priority
+ Identify and support coaches for BB and GB candidates
+ Build the DRM certification community across Network OU
+ Conference Leadership, Planning, Organizing, Executing and Contributing (e.g. DRM, US ST, Predictive Engineering, Statistics/Data Analytics)
**Communications Influence**
+ Influences across functions and businesses while balancing divergent objectives to gain cooperation of other parties.
+ Dynamic communication abilities to hold effective conversations with engineers, project managers, functional managers and business executives.
+ Serve as a principal spokesperson pertaining to DRM.
+ Communications will likely be internal and external.
+ Use influence, negotiation, and persuasion to achieve objectives.
**Must Have: Minimum Requirements**
+ Bachelors degreein Sciences with 15+years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 13+ years of relevant experience
**Nice to Have**
+ Experience leading across geographies and functions
+ Experience in new product development across the entire product life cycle
+ Experience with at least one extended Operations function (e.g. Supplier Management, Process Development, Manufacturing, Sourcing/Purchasing, Demand Planning, Distribution)
+ DRM, DFSS or Six Sigma Belt Certified
+ Advanced degree in Engineering or Statistics discipline or Masters in Business Administration (MBA)
+ Expert experience with databases, Excel, creating macros, visual basic and be comfortable with simple computer programming.
+ Medical device product development experience and a strong understanding of FDA, ICH and IEC standards
+ Experience across the entire product lifecycle.
