**Job Description**


Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.


This position supports the Nuclear Engineering department E86 for the Virginia Class (VCS) project. Specifically, this position is for the Nuclear Fluid Systems Group which provides hands-on waterfront engineering support and oversight for the construction and testing of nuclear Reactor Plant and non-nuclear Steam Plant machinery and fluid systems.


A successful candidate will possess analytical/problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during submarine construction. The individual will have a strong working knowledge of Reactor Plant and/or Steam Plant operations and system make-up. The individual shall have the communication/relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel as well as government representatives/customers and vendors. In addition, the individual will be willing actively work on the waterfront to support on-sight inspections of system problems and provide support to trades during system testing and construction.


Typical duties in this role include the following:


1. Acting as lead engineer for multiple Steam and/or Reactor Plant systems

2. Performing on-site inspections of construction issues that arise during submarine construction in support of resolving Engineering Reports; primarily work out of waterfront offices to effectively support those deckplate inspections

3. Communicating with construction supervision, trades, test engineering and local government representatives (NRRO/RPCO) on a regular basis

4. Using technical writing skills to develop, review and approve technical work instruction such as SCNIs and SCNPs

5. Review, interpret and maintain construction drawings for fluid systems and components (arrangement and fabrication)

6. Support production meetings on behalf of engineering in order to support timely resolutions and provide engineering insight on construction issues


**Basic Qualifications**


5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.


Problem Solving; Critical Thinking; Project Management; Technical Writing


**Preferred Qualifications**


An understanding of reactor plant and/or non-nuclear steam plant fluid systems and components, reactor plant and/or steam plant cleanliness, system test processes in a construction environment and experience with ship construction processes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams of personnel with varying backgrounds and experience levels.
