**Job Description Summary**
Entry level role in Plant Instrumentation & Control Systems Design team. Primary focus is boiling water reactor rod control system engineer responsible for; 1) support of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in operating fleet, 2) design of digital modernization for original systems, and 3) design of digital systems for new reactor types. Scope includes; 1) requirements definition, 2) design specifications, 3) development, test, qualification plans, and 4) field deployment of system.
**Job Description**
Essential Responsibilities:
+ Develop an understanding of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) rod control and information system (RC&IS) across the various types of operating boiling water reactors (BWRs) -3, -4, -5, and -6 types including key functions of the various subsystems such as; Rod Drive Control System (RDCS), Rod and Detector Display, Rod Select Module (RSM), Rod Position Indication System (RPIS), Rod Action Control System (RACS), Rod Interface System (RIS), Rod Gang Drive System (RGDS), HCU Transponder and Branch Junction Modules, as well as inter sub-system communications.
+ Develop an understanding of rod control and information system (RC&IS) new reactor types such as ABWR, ESBWR, BWRX-300, PRISM, ARC-100, etc. including key functions of the various RC&IS subsystems and interfacing components such as; Fine Motion Control Rod Drives (FMCRDs), Hydraulic Control Units (HCUs), FMCRD motor controllers, Multichannel Rod Block Monitor (MRBM), Rod Worth Minimizer (RWM), 3D core monitoring (AUCMEN/3DM), Advanced Thermal Limits Monitor (ATLM) as well as the inter sub-system communications.
+ Prepare system and sub-system level; 1) requirements specifications, 2) functional performance and design specifications for both generic platform product as well as plant specific applications, and 3) design artifacts such as; functional block diagrams (FBD), Logic Diagrams (LDs), Input/Output (I/O) Lists, Functional Algorithms (FX), Setpoints (SP), Human Machine Interface (HMI) as well as basic chassis and cabinet layout diagrams or drawings, various plans and reports, etc.
+ Work within the context of a structured digital I&C and embedded systems and software development lifecycle (SDLC) process including its design reviews.
+ Provide technical oversight through input documentation, written guidance, and answering questions from embedded systems hardware and software design teams as they interpret the requirements and develop their respective detailed implementation documentation.
+ Prepare and maintain the generic product and customer application specific project configuration management documents, bill of material (BOM) or product structure, and other supporting design assurance (DA) and Quality assurance (QA) records using various product lifecycle management (PLM) and related tools.
+ Perform and document technology assessments and trade studies supporting identification and selection of hardware and software technologies with a high probability of satisfying the system requirements and project goals.
+ Perform hands on development, configuration and integration of prototype hardware and software, including programmable logic controllers, industrial PCs, signal conditioning electronics, motor controllers, motors and network components to support system proof of concept testing. Develop proof-of-concept test procedures. Perform and document results of proof-of-concept testing.
+ Develop prototype application software (C/C++), PLC ladder logic and Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens to support proof of concept testing.
+ Develop and configure test equipment and simulators needed to interface with system components to facilitate application software development and testing.
+ Maintain environmental, health and safety qualifications needed to perform laboratory work.
+ Collaborate with the implementation team to plan, coordinate, develop, perform, and review software unit/module tests, hardware/software integration tests, and system validation tests including; simulation, verification and validation (V&V), and factory acceptance test (FAT).
+ Participate in on-site walk-downs of existing equipment in support of defining customer specific application configurations and requirements.
+ Participate in on-site equipment installation as well as site acceptance, commissioning, and start-up testing support.
+ Prepare system training materials for the generic product platform and customer application specific projects as well as deliver the customer training periodically per contract obligations.
+ Collaborate effectively and productively with others in Engineering who are subject matter experts (SME) as well as cross- functionally with Product Line Leader (PLL), Project Manager (PM), Sourcing, etc.
+ Provide technical support to aid customers in troubleshooting rod control system failures and anomalies. Research legacy OEM design documents, customer provided documents and operating experience/failure history to determine possible causes of problems/abnormal symptoms reported by customers.
+ Support identification, assessment, resolution and corrective/preventive actions needed to address non-conformances and conditions adverse to quality.
+ Interface with customer(s) in communications facilitated by the PM to support answering their technical questions.
+ Develop comprehensive planning documents used as basis for work authorizations, detailed level work plans, schedules, status reports, performance, quality, and financial metrics, etc.
+ Ensure deliverables are on-spec., on-budget, and on-schedule.
+ Ensure compliance with GEH internal processes including nuclear regulations and licensing, global industry standards and regulations, and specific customer requirements
+ Support LEAN, simplification, continuous process improvement, and cost-out initiatives.
Basic Qualifications:
+ Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Technology, or equivalent 4-year technical degree
+ 1 year experience with excellent computer and productivity software [e.g.; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Visio]
+ 2 years experience with system and software design, configuration, analysis, testing, and modeling related to:
+ Distributed Control Systems (DCS) OR
+ Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) OR
+ Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA)
+ 1 year experience with design and configuration of variable speed motor controllers including smart embedded motor controllers, variable frequency drives, or adjustable speed drives.
+ 1 year experience designing human machine interface screens or graphical user interfaces for use with DCS or SCADA systems
+ 1 year experience developing C/C++ application software for modern digital control system implementations or modifications.
+ 1 year experience with data communications and networking including serial and Ethernet based industrial communication protocols, including: RS-232/RS-485, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, etc.
+ 2 years experience with structured systems and software development lifecycle methodologies including creation, use and stewardship of company standards, design practices, and guides for object-oriented design architectures, application code libraries, etc.
Desired Qualifications:
+ 3 years experience with power generation or industrial controls equipment preferably in a large, complex, diverse industry; manufacturing high speed assembly automation or robotics, pulp & paper, power, process, marine, medical, pharmaceutical, military-aerospace, research and development, or technology demonstration process control, national or university laboratories, etc.
+ 3 years experience with; instrument application and datasheets, hard and soft input/output (I/O) lists and databases including set point calculations and control algorithms, functional block, logic, and sequence diagrams, electrical one-line diagrams, and mechanical process piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
+ 3 years experience with requirements definition engineering and management including use of associated tools [e.g.; DOORS].
+ 2 years experience with modeling and simulation tools [e.g.; 3KeyMaster, EASY5, LabView, MathCad, Mathmatica, MatLab and SIMULINK].
+ 2 years experience with new product development projects.
+ 2 years experience in nuclear analog and digital instrumentation, control (I&C), monitoring, and electrical plant, field, or start-up engineering with detailed working knowledge in safety-related, reactivity control or critical to power generation systems hardware, software, theory of operation, simulation and detailed design.
+ 1 year experience developing set points and calibration methodologies
+ 1 year experience with equipment environmental and seismic testing and qualification (EQ) to diverse industry standards [e.g.; IEEE, IEC, ASME].
+ 3 years experience in programmable logic controller (PLC) or distributed control systems (DCS) application, product design, development, deployment, and O&M support engineering of complex, high reliability, harsh environment, real time operating digital systems preferably microprocessor based involving single point failure criterion, dual-triple-quad redundancy and voting schemes, signal acquisition, data processing, inter-networking, separation, human factors, safety hazards, reliability, simulation, cyber security requirements, using modern systems [e.g.; GE Mark-VIe/ControlST, Allen-Bradley, Westinghouse CommonQ, DeltaV, Foxboro I/A, Triconex TRICON, Emerson Ovation, Siemens System7 or Teleperm].
+ 2 years experience developing human machine interfaces or graphical user interfaces for use in DCS or SCADA applications
+ 2 years experience developing application software using C/C++ 2 years experience working with motor positioning/servo systems using closed loop control
+ 2 years of hands-on experience wiring cabinets, building connectors, installing and configuring electrical/electronic components for product testing
+ Prior nuclear power plant systems or operator training, certification or operator license including reactor theory
