Position description
Histology Technician: The peripheral nerve lab performs a variety of technical procedures that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations. These technical procedures may include: accessioning specimens; specimen processing and microtomy techniques; paraffin, frozen, and plastic. Technical staining procedures include: routine Hematoxylin and Eosin, special stains, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemical staining, and in situ hybridization. The PN lab also does nerve fiber counts in skin specimens and teased nerve fiber preparations. Assists with training of students and new employees.
The pay range for Histology Technician is $24.03-$35.62 per hour.
Histotechnologist: Prepares specimens and performs testing procedures on pathology specimens that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations for diagnostic and/or prognostic analysis by the pathologist. Applies technical theory to provide overall operational support necessary to maintain and optimize testing activities. Able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off shifts, holidays, on-call, and weekend work assignments. Assists with training of students and employees.
The pay range for the Histotechnologist is $29.37-$44.09 per hour.
Qualifications
Histology Technician (HT):
Associates Degree required
Coursework including 24 semester hours of the following: At least 12 credit hours in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology AND 6 credit hours in chemistry AND 6 credit hours in biology.
Histology Technician (HT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
Histotechnologist (HTL):
Bachelor's Degree required
Histotechnologist (HTL) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
Additional qualifications
Graduate of a NAACLS accredited program preferred.
Graduates of the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences Histology Technician Program will receive preference.
License or certification
Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Board of Certification required at start date. Employees obtaining certification(s) after January 1, 2004 will be required to demonstrate evidence of ongoing maintenance of certification.

Schedule details
This is a day position for the hours of 7:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M, Monday through Friday, with some flexibility in scheduling.
Weekend schedule
Weekend hours are not regularly scheduled, they are on a work load dependent schedule. While there is the potential to work some weekend hours there is a lab rotation of 1 in 6 weekends as needed.
