We are actively recruiting a Principal Scientist I to join our Analytical Sciences team in Richmond, VA.
In this role, the Principal Scientist I designs and conducts high level flavor analytical testing for product development and regulatory sciences. This position will collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing input for experimental design and ensuring deliverable insights.
What you'll be doing:
Develop methodologies to identify and quantify flavor compounds.
Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation, specifically GC/MS, LC/MS, GC/Olfactometry, and related sampling instrumentation.
Perform data analysis. Document, organize and interpret results for multiple ongoing projects.
Explore near-line or in-line analytical methodologies to monitor flavor encapsulation and release.
Build and maintain analytical database for flavor compounds.
Demonstrate expertise and strong knowledge of flavor and analytical chemistry. Effectively communicate and collaborate with flavor application scientists. Use technical knowledge to assist internal customers to identify and deliver solutions.
Identify new flavor analysis methodologies and apply innovative analytical instrumentation to advance understanding of flavor chemical-sensory interactions. Conduct feasibility assessments and make recommendations for applicability and implementation for flavor analysis. Keep abreast of scientific advances in the areas of analytical chemistry and flavor science.
Propose and conduct independent research and multiple projects in terms of planning, analysis, and reporting.
We want you to have:
Masters or PhD in Food, Flavor, Organic, Analytical Chemistry or related field with 8+ years of relevant educational and/or work experience in Flavor Analytical Chemistry.
Expertise in isolation of flavor compounds from complex matrices.
Experience in chromatographic instrumentation, specifically GC/MS.
Demonstrated ability in isolation, identification, and quantification of flavor molecules at trace levels.
Broad knowledge in flavor ingredients, their sensory characteristics, stability and release.
Strong communication skills (written, verbal and presentation) along with demonstrated ability to work in a cross-functional team.
Experience in analytical instrumentation, operation, and data interpretation.
Expertise in sample preparation, including extraction techniques such as Liquid-Liquid Extraction (LLE), Dynamic Headspace Extraction (DHS), Solvent Assisted Flavor Extraction (SAFE), Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME), Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE), and various other techniques.
