As a Principal Engineer in DevEx, you are someone who has demonstrated experience building and operating highly scalable platforms and fault-tolerant systems across a range of technologies. You are interested in all the things that contribute to operational excellence in a highly complex distributed environment. You care about the data that describes the systems that are deployed, changed, and served out of our own data centers and into GCP. A polyglot, you are delighted to work with a tech stack that spans GoLang, Kotlin, Java, ReactJS, ElasticCache, Redis, Kafka and more. You are a thought leader and mentor for internal and external technical talent and actively contribute to the external technical community.Â

Job Summary:Â
Â
As a member of the DevEx team, you will contribute to technical architecture, product prioritization, scalable automation, capacity planning, adoption of supporting technologies, and all other aspects of building world-class privately hosted and cloud-based services. You will work closely with software engineering teams using our products and services and focus on driving adoption, understanding user’s needs, and translating those back into our design.Â

DevEx Engineers are systems and software engineers whose focus is to help Target increase reliability through business insights. We make the operation of software easy, improving resiliency by designing Chaos Engineering, connecting data to answer questions, own the alerting and notifications platform and working on the change and incident platform for Target’s e-commerce/Retail and Enterprise platforms. DevEx’s team goal is to drive understanding of operational excellence for engineering teams and to be able to provide insights into change and incidents for the business. To contribute to these teams, you will:Â
Help to extend, design and integrate our existing platforms by defining architectural and operational requirements.Â
Advocate for new technologies and strategies that can be leveraged across the enterprise.Â
Engage in our security posture and work with them to align reliability and security concerns enterprise wide.Â
In complex and unstructured situations, serve as an expert resource to create and improve standards and best practices to ensure high-performance, scalable, repeatable, and secure deliverables.Â
Work to understand the various needs of the distinct parts of Target’s business.Â
Define and implement new architectures, standards, and methods for operating large-scale enterprise systems in a programmatic way.Â
Influence engineering teams across Target to run their software more efficiently by building tools that they want to adopt.Â
Care about reliability and the big picture and want to make an impact in Production Engineering.Â
Mentor the DevEx engineers and help to lead them as a technical expert.Â

Responsibilities:Â
Provide technical leadership for the DevEx teams building our software products.Â
Define and build the platforms that we need to improve reliability across Target.Â
Set standards for deployments at scale, infrastructure reliability, and scalability. Iterate, revisit, and optimize service availability, scalability, and performanceÂ
Advocate for Agile processes to develop software across Infrastructure and Production Engineering.Â
Manage service availability and scalability through processes, tools, and automation. Â
Collaborate and influence engineering teams across Target to run their software more efficiently by building tools that they want to adoptÂ
Provide the team with thought leadership to promote re-use and develop consistent, resilient, scalable patterns. Â
Use your technology acumen to apply and maintain knowledge of current and emerging technologies within specialized area(s) of the technology domain. Â
Evaluate innovative technologies and participate in decision-making, accounting for several factors such as viability within Target’s technical environment, maintainability, and cost of ownership. Â
Lead the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership of services. Â
Develop plans and schedules, estimate resource requirements, and define milestones and deliverables. Â
Establish new standards and best practices to monitor, test, automate, and maintain IT components or systems. Â
Stay current with Target’s technical capabilities, infrastructure, and technical environment.Â

About You:
BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experienceÂ
10 years or more building and scaling distributed systems leveraging web-scale technologies like Linux, GoLang, Kotlin, Java, ReactJS, ElasticCache, Redis, Kafka, Mongo
Extensive understanding of software development, design, automation, and testingÂ
Experience with modern CI/CD technologies like Git, Gradle, Docker, Artifactory Â
Experience in building, deploying, supporting, and updating highly scalable distributed systems Â
Experienced in building Proof-of-Concepts (PoC) to demonstrate the viability of an architecture, technology, or performance decision Â
Demonstrates building Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) to demonstrate iterative delivery of solutions and not just finished productsÂ

This position may be considered for a Full-Time Remote or Hybrid work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the team members core role will be a blend of virtual and onsite at a Target location. A Full-Time Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that’s not a Target location, does not have a desk at their primary HQ work location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.
Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada residents is $137,500-$247,500. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, Target cares about and invests in you as a team member, so that you can take care of yourself and your family.
