**Why Patients Need You**

Pfizer's purpose is to deliver breakthroughs that change patients' lives. Research and Development is at the heart of fulfilling Pfizer's purpose as we work to translate advanced science and technologies into the therapies and vaccines that matter most. Whether you are in the discovery sciences, ensuring drug safety and efficacy or supporting clinical trials, you will apply cutting edge design and process development capabilities to accelerate and bring the best-in-class medicines to patients around the world.

**What You Will Achieve**

The Senior Scientist - Materials Science position is a laboratory-based position with responsibility for investigating and understanding the solid state chemistry of Pfizer's drug molecules. Responsibilities include generating solid state chemistry data using state-of-the-art instrumentation and computer models, and interpreting the data to allow new medicines to be brought to the market. The candidate serves on multidisciplinary project teams and is responsible for defining the final drug substance form (salt/polymorph/hydrate) of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and the preferred physical attributes (particle shape/particle size/surface energy) needed for optimum API and drug product performance. The position is based in Lake Forest, IL (USA).

It is your hard work and dedication that will make Pfizer ready to achieve new milestones and help patients across the globe.

**How You Will Achieve It**

+ Conduct solid state physical and chemical characterization of small molecules of pharmaceutical relevance. This includes particle characterization (e.g., particle size, shape) and solid state characterization (e.g., spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, thermal analysis).

+ Crystallize neutral molecules, salt and co-crystal forms of drug candidates (including hydrates, solvates and polymorphs) and evaluate these forms for acceptability as drug substances as it relates to chemical manufacturing and formulation into pharmaceutical products.

+ Apply state-of-the-art computational approaches to predict the properties and performance of crystalline and amorphous drug substance samples.

+ Oversee the work of external partners conducting laboratory studies, and provide tactical guidance and critical analysis of raw data.

+ Solve scientific problems using contemporary solid state experimental and computational techniques.

+ Participate on multidisciplinary project teams, and collaborate with colleagues to define and implement screening and characterization strategies according to project timelines.

+ Draft and review sections of regulatory submissions as well as delivering reports to support patenting Pfizer's intellectual property.

+ Provide materials science support for colleagues in other lines.

+ Lead the development of new scientific approaches and knowledge within the global Materials Science organization.

**Qualifications**

**Must-Have**

+ Bachelor's Degree(BA/BS)and 9+ years of relevant experience.

+ Experience in small molecule crystallization and solid state characterization (such as x-ray powder diffraction, polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, NMR, etc).

+ Good organizational skills, the ability to work independently and excellent oral and written communication skills.

+ Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate, collaborate and influence at all levels within the organization.

+ Strong interest and motivation to learn new technologies and concepts

**Nice-to-Have**

+ Master's degree(MA/MS)and 7+ years of relevant experience.

+ Doctoral Degree (PhD/PharmD) with 0-4 years of relevant experience.

+ Experience with using contemporary computational approaches to predict the properties and performance of pharmaceutical materials.

+ Understanding of the physical properties needed for drug substance manufacture and formulation into drug product

+ Experience with Linux, High Performance computing environments (SLURM, LSF etc.) and scripting languages (such as Python,Rand bash).

**PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS**

+ Standing or sitting for several hours.

+ Ability to occasionally lift 0 - 40 pounds.

+ Mathematical and reasoning ability

+ Interpretation of application of SOPs

+ Ability to work effectively on multiple projects with set deadlines

**NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS**

This position requires adherence to laboratory practices, including maintaining a clean environment and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment for the task being performed. Flexibility in schedule may be required to perform certain analyses, including adherence to timed studies.
