Job Description

Manulife Investment Management, Agriculture, is a leading globally focused timber and farmland investment manager, with AUM of around $14 billion and a portfolio of assets located in North America, Latin America, and Australia. Its agriculture platform invests in and manages around $4 billion in investments, with a highly diversified farmland portfolio in terms of commodities and geographies.

Through its Farmland Plus strategy, MIM Ag's platform seeks to invest in vertically integrated agricultural operations, in which it intends to deploy significant resources (people and capital) to grow the business (i) organically through myriad value creation initiatives, as well as (ii) via M&A and acquisition of additional farmland.

The person taking in the role of Transaction Manager will be a key driver of deal analysis and due diligence efforts, supporting the team throughout the entire lifecycle of an acquisition process, from deal origination, analysis, due diligence, integration planning and take-over.

The opportunity

Support deal execution for new platforms, as well as add-on acquisitions for existing portfolio companies seeking to expand their footprint. From time to time, this person may support standard farmland transactions outside of the Farmland Plus team.

The tasks outlined below will be performed in partnership with other teams within MIM Ag, including Legal, Valuation, Finance, Strategy, Operations, Acquisitions, and others involved to varying degrees throughout a deal lifecycle:

  • Support relationship cultivation with advisors, investment banks, and consultants as part of deal origination efforts,

  • Review early-stage opportunities and support the team in assessing their attractiveness prior to a formal engagement,

  • Work alongside the Valuation team to assess the value of an opportunity,

  • Structure deals due diligence proposals, setting roles & responsibilities, including a proposed timeline and budget that would be submitted for approval,

  • Own the development of Investment Committee (IC) memos and be able to present those at the IC meetings,

  • Assign and lead execution of different due diligence workstreams,

  • Support the negotiation efforts throughout a transaction,

  • Train and mentor junior team members, including analysts and interns,

What we are looking for

  • Background in either of (a) corporate development, or (b) M&A advisory / investment banking,

  • Experience in implementing M&A processes, with knowledge in the M&A deal process,

  • Total minimum experience of around 2 to 3 years on the areas noted above,

  • Highly organized, diligent and a clear communicator,

  • Project management skills on projects with clear results and timeline,

  • Capable of developing relationships of trust various partners,

  • Business, Economics, or Natural Resource-based degree is preferred.
