Overview:


Reporting to the Assistant Dean of International Advisement and Student Diversity Initiatives, the Associate Director will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and will be required to assist the Assistant Dean in monitoring and updating the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) as well as providing immigration advising to Juilliards international population. The Associate Director will advise on international guest visa categories which include B/WB, O, J, TN, and H visa categories.




The Associate Director will coordinate outreach and programming efforts related to cultural adjustment and integration for The Juilliard Schools international population and global awareness for the entire campus (international and domestic). These activities will include but are not limited to international student orientation, International Education Week, cultural programming, and leading workshops.




Working with other members of the Student Engagement Team (SET), the Associate Director will assess needs, determine best practices, and implement and assess collaborative programming. The Associate Director will also work with other members of the Student Development division and other Juilliard divisions and offices to provide programs for the Juilliard community.



Responsibilities:


Immigration Management and Advisement:




  • Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), assisting the Assistant Dean with preparation, processing, and advising immigration and related documents including I-20 and DS-2019 forms, school transfers, extension of stays, practical and academic training, reinstatements, and change of status, visa support letters, and family invitations.




  • Provides guidance and advisement to international students, faculty, staff, and visitors and provides appropriate referrals when necessary.



  • Advises international students, faculty, and visitors on the responsibilities and benefits of their visa status.



  • Conducts routine reviews of SEVIS alerts.



  • Develops/updates OIA policies and procedures as needed.



  • Coordinates the international visitor request process by corresponding with visitors and host departments, gathering documentation, and verifying immigration status.




  • Administers immigration check-ins for foreign nationals, including faculty and staff.



  • Interprets and monitors changes in US government regulations.



  • Maintains a working knowledge of the latest immigration laws and federal regulations affecting international students and exchange visitors, and current world and economic affairs.



  • Actively conducts reviews on immigration compliance as changes in university and federal policies occur.



  • Updates immigration information in Cadence.




  • Runs reports on deadlines, expirations, and other related topics regarding the international population to ensure compliance.



  • Creates and publishes informational materials including pre-arrival materials, procedural handouts, and online materials including the website, Facebook, and Canvas.



  • Other duties as assigned.




Programs & Services:




  • Initiates and participates in the coordination of multicultural and social programming and activities for the Juilliard international population, including the creation of marketing materials, room management, assessment, and catering as needed.



  • Assist the Assistant Dean and Diversity Initiatives Assistant with EDIB-related programs.



  • Recommends, implements, and manages outreach efforts such as the OIA Facebook account, international alumni connections, and general programming to serve the international community best.



  • Serves as a member of the Student Engagement Team (SET) to create collaborative programs for the Juilliard community.



  • Works collaboratively with other departments to create programs and processes to aid the Juilliard international population.




  • Manages webpage updates and online marketing of events and deadlines.



  • Assess the effectiveness of current programming efforts through surveys and use data to improve events.



  • Presents sessions during the International Student Orientation and aids with the planning.



  • Participates in faculty/staff training, DSO training, and other workshops/training as needed



  • Provides tax assistance to the international community by organizing tax services, creating online and printed materials, and providing tax advice to students.




  • LiaIses with Student Employment Office to ensure compliance with student hiring.



  • Other duties as assigned.




Supervision:




  • Supervises work-study students including hiring, training, evaluation, scheduling, and day-to-day management.




Student Development:




  • Serve in the after-hours emergency on-call rotation for on-campus incident response.



  • Serve as a member of the Assessment and Care Team (ACT).



  • Serve on the English Affairs Committee.



Qualifications and Skills:


  • Bachelor's degree.



  • Minimum 5 years of formal experience directly working with international students in a higher education setting.



  • Operational knowledge of SEVIS reporting requirements, as well as federal laws and regulations pertaining to international students in F-1 and J-1 status.



  • Demonstrated ability to research, comprehend, analyze, and apply complex immigration regulations.




  • Demonstrated knowledge of current technology in student information systems and strong competency in Microsoft Office applications.



  • Strong understanding of and sensitivity to international student issues.



  • Understanding of and commitment to diversity and the mission of The Juilliard School.



  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively across cultures, both individually and in group settings.




  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure with confidential material while also effectively handling multiple tasks.



  • Interest in and appreciation of the performing arts.



  • Substantial and continually refreshed knowledge of immigration regulations.



  • Strong internal initiative with the ability to independently complete, review and report on work tasks.



Required:


  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.



  • Must be a U.S. citizen, or U.S. permanent resident as required by federal regulations to serve as DSO and ARO.



Preferred:


  • Masters degree in student services, intercultural relations, or other relevant fields.



  • Experience working with Slate



  • Possess some background in ESL (English as a Second Language) advising/teaching.




  • Experience of studying, living, or working abroad.
