Job Description

Primary Responsibilities:

Reporting to the CFO of SVB Private, theController, SVB Private (SVB Private Bank and Wealth Management) will be responsible for overseeing all accounting, controls and external reporting requirements related to SVB Private. She/he will be a key member of the SVB Private CFO's team and have a dotted line relationship into the bank's central Accounting team.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive finance expertise, outstanding strategic and analytical acumen, and in-depth knowledge of internal controls. She/He will continue to build the credibility and efficiency of the accounting function by instilling a business-focused control-oriented mindset, while also driving toward an integrated and efficient best-in-class standard accounting process across the team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for SVB Private accounting and close process and ensuring accuracy and completeness of SVB Private financial information. Working with business to ensure appropriate revenue recognition and expense accruals

  • Ensure proper management controls and governance are embedded across SVB Private Finance function

  • Provide technical and operational accounting leadership for new products and initiatives. Partner with business leaders to understand existing and new products to develop solutions that meet accounting and reporting requirements as well as the needs of the business. Liaise with accounting policy team for appropriate accounting treatment of new products. Help business to determine propriate expenses capitalization for certain initiatives.

  • Support business expansion from accounting perspective including set up new business unit, G/L account for new legal entities under SVB Private. In charge of legal entity audit, exams and resolve any audit related issues. Coordinate with treasury to support legal entity capital infusion effort.

  • Partnership with SOX team to review existing control procedures across SVB Private business to identify financial and operating risks, design, and document controls to mitigate those risks. Includes developing and monitoring control environment, working with business and SOX team to the business to drive financial integrity, and liaising with SOX team, internal audit and external auditor as needed

  • Participate in Fed, FDIC and other regulatory reviews related to SVB Private. Participate in Reg-W and cost allocation discussion and review. Identify and resolve any finance related regulatory findings

  • Perform goodwill impairment analysis and documentation for SVB Private.

  • Act as governing body for SVB Private finance procedure documentation.


Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Financial Control & Governance - Represent finance for any SVB Private SOX related topics (control design, reporting, mortaring, and driving for remediation). Responsible for SOX control documentation for SVB Private related finance procedures.

  • Accounting - Oversee day to day accounting function for SVB Private related transactions and any non-routine transactions. Oversee accounting operations, close and associated controls. Provide technical and operational accounting leadership for new products and initiatives.

  • External Reporting - Oversee and review preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reporting for SVB Private, including reporting packages for management teams and meetings, portions of SEC filings, regulatory filings and various ad hoc requests and regulatory exams.

  • Partner with operations teams to ensure key systems are in compliance with GAAP and regulatory reporting requirements and to ensure key information is captured, stored and available to meet reporting needs.

  • Perform and document technical research and conclusions on various accounting matters.

  • Recommend, maintain and enhance accounting and finance procedures to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley, GAAP, applicable internal policies, and regulatory requirements. Maintain awareness of, as well as evaluate, accounting and regulatory pronouncements and lead the development of new accounting policies and procedures as appropriate.

  • Resolve issues that arise across financial systems, driving accountability across key stakeholders in Technology and Finance functions (Accounting, FP&A, Operations, Tax and Treasury), from idea through implementation.

  • Drive robust frameworks and methods to understand current state of, identify gaps/propose improvements, evaluate solution alternatives, prioritize requirements, identify and design to-be future state, and drive consensus to achieve agreed set of requirements.

Qualifications

This individual will have at least 10+ years of experience and a distinguished record of performance as a senior manager or controller equivalent at major diversified financial institutions. Prior career experience with securities and derivative products is required. In addition, the individual will possess the following:

  • Proven and proactive financial officer with successful track record of providing strong, assertive and positive leadership

  • Extensive experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); familiarity with SOX and other regulatory requirements.

  • Effective, high energy business partner with the ability to influence, collaborate, and work across the organization, with the CFO, CAO, controllers, treasury, tax and other finance leaders.

  • Ability to interface with external stakeholders including external auditors and regulators.

  • A highly organized individual who is disciplined in the oversight of details while maintaining the big picture perspective.

  • Strong initiative, comfortable working within an entrepreneurial environment and assuming a strong sense of ownership over all accounting-related matters.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills.

  • Exceptional collaboration and relationship-building skills and is a leader and influencer.

  • Candidate must possess an undergraduate degree in accounting and/or business administration. CPA designation required.

  • Public accounting, SOX and banking industry related experiences preferred.
