We are seeking a full-time Lead Software Engineer on our Marine Engineering Networking team in Cary, NC, who is passionate about networking technology. You will work with a number of wireless and wired networking technologies, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, LTE, Bluetooth, ANT, and/or NMEA/CAN. Garmin's marine networking products utilize protocols and technologies such as TCP/IP, HTTP client and servers, mDNS, DHCP, over the air (OTA) software updates, video streaming protocols and many more.In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership and project planning for software development for products, applications, or systems new to Garmin. (This is not a remote position; but it is hybrid - 3 days in office, 2 days at home, if you prefer).
Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Responsible for providing key technical contributions for new marineproducts and/or applications including software development in C language and networking protocols likeWi-fi, Bluetooth, TCP/IP, etc
May serve as a Lead Software Engineer for projects in new markets or relying heavily on new technologies
Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced software engineers (Software Engineer 1 & 2 & Senior Software Engineers)
Serves as architect for solutions that span multiple groups or disciplines
Works with software vendors to integrate externally developed deliverables into projects, as required
Evaluates new technologies, features and functions and offers suggestions
Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as appropriate
Defines general approaches and specific solutions to technical problems considered state of the art
Applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to all assigned projects and resolves complex problems
Provides significant contribution to software reviews across multiple product and/or application types
Completes broadly defined complex tasks including taking conceptual ideas and putting them to practice by using creativity and ingenuity
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Math, Physics or related field AND a minimum of 9 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Must possess proficiency in writing software in C
Must possess familiarity with various networking protocols and standards, including TCP/IP, Wi-Fi, LTE, Controller Area Network (CAN)/NMEA, Bluetooth and/or ANT
Must have experience developing and/or maintaining networking-related software running on an embedded system, preferably Linux
Demonstrated experience in serving as the lead software engineer for projects in new markets or relying heavily on new technologies
Demonstrated experience with architecting solutions for multiple groups and/or disciplines
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
Desired Qualifications
Experience integrating 3rd party software
Familiarity with existing networking software implementations, like ConnMan, wpa_supplicant or others
An interest in marine technology, boating, sailing, or being on the water
