The Principal IT Technologist assesses and designs technical solutions, defines requirements, documents, reviews cost efficiencies, and provides expertise guidance for functions within the campus connectivity infrastructure network access space, throughout global Medtronic. This position will include engineering of WLAN-related activities and standards, such as WLAN infrastructure, as well as Wi-Fi access, adhering to security, user access and configuration policies. This position works very closely with other IT functions, cross-functional teams, MSPs, and operating units within Medtronic to coordinate the implementation and ongoing support of systems and operations.

**A DAY IN THE LIFE**

Defines, designs, and implements network communications and solutions.

Contributes to defining the direction for new products, processes, standards, or operational plans based on business strategy with a significant impact on work group results.

Proposes and implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the system.

Contributes to network infrastructure planning, installation, monitoring, testing and support.

Negotiates and places orders with common carriers.

Typically provides guidance, coaching and training to others.

Manage small to large and sometimes complex projects, including delegation of work and review of infrastructure.

Provides technical analysis in data network planning, engineering, and design.

Provides analysis for implementation techniques and tools for the most efficient solution to network problems.

Develops solutions to moderately complex problems, and/or makes moderate to significant improvements of processes, systems, or products independently to enhance performance of job area.

Coordinates third-party maintenance for network equipment and troubleshoots problems with department users and department network administrators.

May develop uniform operation procedures.

Provides operational support for the organizations Local Area Networks (LANs); Wide Area Networks (WANs); and Metro Area Networks (MANs).

Monitors LAN, WAN, and MAN performance; maintains security to ensure that procedures are implemented and enforced and troubleshoots problems.

Evaluates and recommends hardware and software solutions that meet and improve business needs.

Architect for all wireless LAN and Cisco ISE activities.

Define hardware, software and configuration template standards for Wireless LAN as well as campus/branch WAN and LAN.

Provide input on the coordination of Cisco Wireless LAN controller and access point refresh projects.

Standardize configurations on all wireless LAN controllers across the enterprise for consistent SSID profiles, 802.1x/RADIUS, guest wireless and 802.11 radio settings.

Coordinate efforts of wireless LAN specialists on first and second level support teams.

Network Management Tool administrator for Cisco Prime Infrastructure, Cisco ACS, and Micro Focus Network Automation (HPNA).


GENERAL

Develops, documents, and configures systems specifications that conform to defined architecture standards, address business requirements, and processes.

Involved in planning of system and development deployment as well as responsible for meeting hardware and software compliance and security standards.

Evaluates interface between hardware and software, operational requirements, and characteristics of overall system.

Establishes and documents system design, parameters and formats, ensures hardware and software systems functionality, performance and compatibility, and coordinates and/or modifies system parameters in terms of configurations, such as existing and projected computer capacity and capabilities.

Actively identifies system functionality or performance deficiencies, executes changes to existing systems, and tests functionality of the system to correct deficiencies and maintain more effective data handling, data integrity, conversion, input/ output requirements, and storage.

May document testing and maintenance of system updates, modifications, and configurations.

May act as a liaison with key technology vendor technologists or other business functions.


**MUST HAVE** (Minimum Qualifications)

High school diploma (or equivalent) and 12+ years of experience

OR

Bachelors degree and 7+ years of experience or advanced degree and 5+ years of experience


**NICE TO HAVE** (Preferred Qualifications)

Previous Medtronic experience

7+ years of network experience of Wireless local and wide area networks

Experience with SD-WAN technologies, deployment, and optimization.

Experience with Network performance monitoring (bandwidth, throughput, end user experience)

Experience setting up a high availability data center environment spanned across multiple sites

Knowledge of Linux and Windows servers, with an emphasis on Linux, virtualization technologies and network monitoring tools

Experience working with Networking technologies and topologies (EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, etc.), Security Information Management, IPS/IDS, Firewalls, DLP, and behavioral/risk-based security frameworks

High degree of learning agility with the ability to readily consume and apply new information and concepts with developed analytical problem-solving skills

Knowledge in technical modeling, design, and concept generation

Excellent leadership and teamwork skills

Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

Strong collaboration and influencing skills

Broad knowledge of data analysis/database design technologies/tools in an operational environment

Strong technical acumen, decision making, and influence skills across all levels of an organization

Strong communication skills, including with employees, clients, senior management and vendors

Solid presentation skills, including the ability to translate data concepts and technical information into business terms (e.g., ability to explain complex technical solutions and architecture strategies to non-technical resources)

Demonstrated ability to work in a global, virtual organization

Work experience in the Medical Device Industry, or other regulated industry
