Best Buy Digital and Technology teams are working in a hybrid work model. Most roles can predominantly work from home but the person who fills this role will must be within a commutable distance to Richfield, MN, Seattle, WA, Atlanta, GA, or Boston, MA

Best Buy IT has a key position available within our Observability Engineering team, ensuring performance and reliability of our critical applications and infrastructure services.

The Sr Engineer Observability Engineering will be responsible for designing and implementing solutions leveraging open-source software, internally developed applications, and industry leading application performance management tools. Leveraging deep technical experience across a broad range of software languages, frameworks, and cloud providers, this roll will be responsible for developing and supporting new software capabilities to empower Best Buy DevOps teams with observability data (traces, events, metrics, and logs) and self-service tools across BestBuy.com, Best Buy mobile applications, retail stores, and supply chain warehouse locations.

This position will serve on a team of performance and reliability focused technology professionals, cooperatively working to measure and monitor IT solutions and ensuring product teams can deliver new features faster. The ideal candidate will also possess demonstrated experience in mining and analyzing data to diagnose complex issues and be able to communicate findings effectively to stakeholders with various level of technical expertise.

Creativity in engineering solution design and implementation is critical to the success of this team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing and implementing software solutions and be able to demonstrate expertise. This role will be challenged to think in new ways and solve engineering challenges with the focus of ensuring Best Buy applications are designed to be resilient and reliable.

Ideal candidates will have a broad understanding of all aspects of web technologies, monitoring, scripting, development, and data analysis. In addition, they will be recognized as a technical or process expert in at least one area of specialist as identified qualifications below.

Key Responsibilities
1) Technology thought leadership, knowledge of Observability industry trends, and application of cloud native concepts to develop new service offerings across a highly complex / highly dynamic technology landscape
2) Partnering and contributing to strategic planning with product, engineering, and operations to implement end to end observability, availability and performance monitoring solutions including telemetry capture, automated problem/root cause identification and proactive alerting
3) Accountable for end-to-end solution from ideation through development, delivery and support of large projects focused on Observability and self-service monitoring capabilities
4) Proactively engaging product and engineering teams to identify opportunities to further enhance Observability tool capabilities and lead requirement gathering and design sessions
5) Ability to anticipate risks and technical issues early in the product lifecycle and makes/influences appropriate decisions to avoid them.
6) Setting a consistent example of agile practices, reliability, performance, application support, leads spring planning and coaches other engineers to work as part for a cohesive DevOps team

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelors degree or equivalent experience. Relevant experience includes working in application development, performance engineering, or application monitoring

  • 3+ years of experience in one or more of the following skill sets: front end development (HTML/CSS/JS), back-end development (Ruby, Java, Python), monitoring tools (Dynatrace, Prometheus, Splunk, Graphite, Grafana, Elastic).

  • 2+ years of experience building and deploying new technologies within an enterprise environment

  • Able to communicate effectively with stakeholders across functional areas with various levels of technical experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5-6 years of relevant professional experience

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Engineering, Management Information Systems, or another related field

  • Experience with enterprise scale APM (Application Performance Monitoring) solutions e.g. Dynatrace, Splunk, AppDynamics

  • Experience instrumenting applications with Open Telemetry

  • Experience with enterprise scale DEM (Digital Experience Monitoring) solutions

  • Experience with scripting languages (Python, JavaScript, Ruby, Perl)

  • Experience with CI / CD and DevOps philosophies and working with infrastructure-as-code

  • Experience with public and hybrid cloud technologies (AWS, GCP and Azure)

  • Experience with open-source technologies and big data platforms

  • Experience using configuration management and orchestration tools like Puppet and Chef

  • Passion and drive to write code and solve problems in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, and Azure)
