About the team and role


VizQL Server is the service at the heart of Tableaus Analytics capabilities, and our team is on a mission to ensure customers have a performant, reliable experience with our product when hosted at high scale. We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to pair with the two teams in VizQL Server that are responsible for monitoring, improving, and evolving the service to ensure our service meets the highest standards of availability, performance, reliability and observability, and scalability that exceed customer needs.


The Viz Session Management team orchestrates Tableau's Analytics components within VizQL Server to deliver a performant, scalable experience for users' interactive viewing and authoring sessions. The Monitoring & Health team drives features to increase levels of availability, performance, reliability and observability for this service that backs creating and viewing visualizations in Tableau.


Your work will directly improve the customer experience and the value of Tableaus brand for our growing cloud-based Analytics community in Tableau Online and Public, as well as for our larger Enterprise customers.


Success in the role


You will be instrumental in representing customers--both internal and external--actively seeking input and areas of partnership as we evolve. In order to be successful in this role, youll excel at influencing without authority, dealing with ambiguity, capable of operating at all levels, and are able to understand technical details quickly. You will possess a strong attention to detail, a reputation as someone who focuses on the customer, brings simplified solutions to complex problems in a technical environment, and does what they say they will do. You must be comfortable operating in a fluid, agile, and team-oriented environment; bringing order to chaos.


Some of the things youll be doing include


  • Serve as Product Manager and Product Owner for VizQL Server, developing and maintaining the product roadmap to meet internal and external customer needs and to continue to mature our services.

  • Work with partner teams across Tableau and Salesforce on company-wide initiatives related to scale, security, performance, availability, and other service-related projects, defining the needs for your area and communicating requirements and progress.

  • Drive product/feature project definition and ensure cross-functional coordination (developers, testers, designers, sales, marketing, support, management) toward successful delivery of the engineering projects.

  • Work with your teams to define metrics for accurately measuring and improving our customers experience with our service.

  • Lead long-range planning for your area, partnering with your engineering teams on defining future state and the short- and medium-term progression.

  • Evangelize your product/features to both internal and external customers, hosting customer conversations and attending/presenting at relevant events.

  • Ensure that all projects execute smoothly and effectively, recommend process improvements to increase engineering team efficiency and velocity.

  • Mentor and teach other Product Managers and members of the Development team, particularly around building and maintaining APIs and services.

  • Present Tableau product capabilities, vision, value propositions, and roadmap briefings to leadership and internal and external customers.


Your knowledge and skills


  • 5+ years as a Product Manager in a technical space.

  • Prior experience with running a service at-scale is required. Knowledge of standards and best practices related to scaling, performance, reliability, and observability.

  • Technical proficiency: Ability to understand code and drive conversations around technology choices and communicate at varying levels of abstraction.

  • Prior experience with API design and componentized/composable platforms, and in particular experience navigating complex technical ownership/boundaries of monolithic services.

  • Able to handle ambiguity and oversee multiple cross-team projects, working with product and engineering managers across teams and departments to deliver customer scenarios.

  • Exceptional problem solving, teamwork and leadership skills.

  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.

  • Ability to deal with conflict and drive to a solution.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


Education/Experience


  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
