Director, Software Engineering

As a Director of software engineering in Developer Productivity & Experience (DP&E) team leading test experience and enablement, you will implement and execute strategy to help Tableau engineers deliver high quality products by building quality processes, test infrastructure and tools and track quality metrics in order to build quality first culture within the engineering org. You will collaborate closely with product management, feature/product engineering, program management and support teams to execute and deliver solutions and tools in alignment with org vision and strategy that spans across Tableau engineering. As a people leader, you will inspire and mentor a team of talented managers and engineers and build core competencies in test architecture, quality governance and best practices in quality engineering.

Responsibilities:

• Participating in cross-functional coordination, planning, and reviews with leads from other DP&E teams

• Drive broader Developer Productivity & Experience team vision and goals as relevant to test experience team

• Manage hiring, training and retaining the talent including but not limited to skill development/upskilling as per organizational needs and to facilitate individual growth

• Focus on building strong teams and keeping them focused on the goal of developer enablement to ship high-quality, useful and industry changing software

• Providing technical guidance, career development, and mentoring to team members

• Ensuring teams have clear priorities and adequate resources

• Maintaining high morale and motivating the team to go above and beyond

• Help build Quality first culture within the engineering team

• Hands-on technical leadership and guidance

• Ability to understand the plumbing and how the systems are being are built to build efficient tools that can validate these systems

• Empower teams to build common, capable and scalable test infrastructure and frameworks for functional and non-functional automation support to enable engineering teams to automate their tests for faster releases

• Be in charge of building tools that provide actionable feedback to teams on how to improve (functional, non-functional product quality)

• Lead and direct team to build latency reduction tools, cloud code coverage infrastructure, cloud scalable test infrastructure, regression detection mechanisms and tools

• Conduct and present weekly reviews along with facilitation of tool demos

• Passionate about systems engineering and working with developers as your customers

• Passionate about quality and frameworks/tools

Required Skills:

• BS or higher degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

• 3+ years of experience in managing, mentoring, and leading software engineering teams

• 5 years of hands-on software development experience

• Background in quality engineering, specifically building test infrastructure and test tools, fostering quality culture

• Experience in performance and scalability is a must

• Understanding and working experience in CICD landscape architecture - continuous integration at scale that enables running 1000s of tests everyday in response to every check-in by every developer

• Have a mindset of starting small, proving incremental value, and then doubling down as the projects begin showing value

• Ability to delegate and prioritize tasks

• Experience with attracting and growing talent

• Experience with microservices design and implementation.

• Experience with container management frameworks including Kubernetes (EKS and GKE), and Docker

• A collaborative and driven leader with the ability to innovate, solve tough problems and deliver results

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
