Principal Polymer Scientist

As a Polymer Scientist, the individual will serve as the polymer/materials subject matter expert (SME) in the Extractable and Leachable group participating in a variety of projects to support biocompatibility submissions to FDA and global regulated notified bodies. They will be responsible for providing technical expertise, consultation, analysis, and project support. They must have strong ability to apply knowledge of polymer/materials science and engineering techniques to provide creative solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.  They should have a fundamental understanding of biomedical materials, polymer synthesis and synthetic manufacturing processes. This position will support project teams across Abbott medical device businesses.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with chemistry, toxicology, biocompatibility staff and management on a regular basis

  • Applies knowledge of how polymer materials, components, and subassemblies are manufactured, packaged, and processed as a function of the final finished form

  • Acts as liaison to material, component, sub-assembly suppliers and analyzes supplier information to understand synthesis, manufacturing, and processing detail

  • Identifies the potential of materials to contain cohorts of concern

  • Contributes that knowledge to the understanding of potential and actual polymer extractable/leachable profile

  • Applies the above understanding to assess the impact of manufacturing, processing, and sterilization on chemical/biological safety

  • Authors, reviews, and approves protocols and reports related to the role

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Required 

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 10-12 years, Masters with 7-10 years or PhD with 4-6 years of experience in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biomedical or related field with an emphasis in polymeric materials

  • Extensive understanding of the principles associated with biomaterials, synthetic polymers, material processing and characterization, biological evaluation of medical materials and devices

  • Industrial and/or academic research experience in material science, medical device, chemistry or combination.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate to all levels of the organization

  • Experience with industry related test standards

  • Extensive experience with various material characterization techniques

  • Highly proficient in collaborating with project stakeholders (client and internal), end-users, business partners, and technical team members
