The opportunity
Client Portfolio Managers act as representatives of Manulife Investment Management's investment teams. They are tasked with developing a detailed understanding of our investment strategies and the underlying portfolios, including general positioning, holdings, and performance attribution, as well as general market and industry knowledge. CPMs serve as a key member of our investment teams and with this knowledge are responsible for effectively positioning and communicating the Firm's capabilities, views, positions and performance to current and prospective clients, consultants, and prospects as well as internal constituencies. CPMs serve as a key interface between the Sales and Relationship Management Teams and the investment teams, addressing many client and prospective client inquiries, thereby enabling our investment teams to focus on managing our clients' assets.
Responsibilities:
Work with the US Core and Core Plus Fixed Income team on all aspects of Client Portfolio Management for the retail distribution channel. Includes the articulation and dissemination of key investment strategy content - philosophy, process, results and overall messaging
Serve as primary investment management contact for retail clients and act as principal spokesperson for the team in support of retail distribution. This will include considerable travel with the retail business consultants at John Hancock (approx. 80% travel) and may include both advisor and end client events
Collaborate with all investment team members to ensure consistency of messaging across all channels
Partner with the marketing and sales administration team to develop retail marketing collateral including presentations, RFP/database content, and other relevant materials
Identify and develop opportunities to focus efforts of the distribution team on targeting firm and/or product specific campaigns. Maintain knowledge of and assist in creating associated content and proactive action plan
Manage travel to effectively cover multiple geographic territories and balance efforts between strong flow regions and those needing to increase sales
Conduct ongoing research to track key competitors, market trends and threats and incorporate into product positioning and communication. Proactively update retail distribution teams on an ongoing basis on points of differentiation
Examine and supervise characteristics and statistics for assigned strategies to understand and be a source of knowledge on covered strategies.
Interact with key personnel across Manulife GWAM as well as our prospects and clients in a highly professional manner.
Consult with sales executives regarding sales strategy.
Perform other duties as required, which may include activities such as supporting new product development activities or providing input into other product team projects and initiatives.
How will you create impact?
The position will report to the co-head of core/core plus fixed income. The person in this position will articulate our strategy and positioning to the retail channel working closely with distribution partners working for John Hancock Investment Management.
What we are looking for
Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance or a related field; CFA and/or MBA preferred
Demonstrated ability in a client facing role with experience in the fixed income markets.
Strong asset class, strategy and market knowledge
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with and coordinate between various groups within a global organization
Proven understanding of sales & relationship management process with demonstrated ability to support those processes
Solid understanding of the marketplace, and trends with and the needs of both institutional and retail sales channels
Proven analytical skills and command of key investment management principles
Strong communication and presentation skills
Proven track record to work independently in a role with significant impact on client interaction, both internally and externally
Strong PC skills, including familiarity with key industry related software and databases
