Senior Director, Insurance & Risk Advisory Services

Alvarez & Marsal is seeking to expand its Insurance and Risk Advisory Services (IRAS) team in the Northeastern U.S. with a Director/Senior Director to be particularly focused on serving the private equity marketplace with risk, insurance, and transaction services.

Insurance & Risk Advisory Services (IRAS) is internally aligned with A&M Private Equity Performance Improvement Services (PEPI) practice. IRAS provides insurance industry advisory and risk management advisory services. IRAS insurance industry advisory serves the insurance industry vertical with finance, strategy and operations consulting for insurance companies, brokers, and intermediaries. IRAS risk management advisory services all industries, with an emphasis on serving the private equity marketplace, with risk management and insurable risk management solutions.

Our PEPI-IRAS services expected to be supported in full or in part by this position include:

Insurable Risk Management Solutions

  • Transaction support - due diligence, quality of earnings, transaction advisory and structuring and merger integration or carveout

  • Private equity risk management - outsourced risk management in support of the whole of the PE Ecosystem

  • Performance improvement - structural, financial, and functional leadership to drive change including insurance and benefits advisory, risk and insurance diagnostics, cost takeout (total cost of risk) and enterprise de-risking

  • Project leadership - Interim management, insurance, and risk functional transformation and departmental stand up

  • Distressed company support - executive protection, insurance and risk function intervention and Financial Advisory/ Chief Restructuring Officer or Trustee support


The IRAS practice is a growing business with excellent opportunities for career advancement and building leadership skills. The PEPI-IRAS leadership team is focused on providing career development and training for high performing professionals.

Professional Experience

  • Prior customer and market-facing private equity experience in risk management and insurance. Experience as a risk manager, insurance broker, underwriter, coverage specialist or consultant providing similar services is highly preferred.

  • Significant insurance consulting experience in large-scale transaction due diligence in the private equity and corporate mergers & integrations space. Experience should include complex quality of earnings, valuation, collateral, financing, and cash flow analysis

  • Hands-on or prior advisory experience with unique elements impacting transactions including captives, loss portfolio transfers, transition services, purchase agreements and day-one readiness assessments

  • Demonstrable track-record of experience with a broad spectrum of insurance coverages with emphasis on financial lines (D&O, GPL, E&O, Cyber), specialties coverages, commercial liability, and workers compensation

  • Experience managing risk vendor performance (brokers, third party administrators, actuaries, and other consultants)

  • Familiarity with enterprise risk management (ERM) implementation and frameworks (ISO 3100, COSO)

  • Direct responsibility for customer management, sales, and contract negotiations

  • Experience utilizing risk tools (actuarial and benchmarking)

  • Strong communication skills: written, oral, and analytical with ability to listen and develop clear, credible, and concise responses to complex / technical client concerns

  • Initiative to lead and drive

  • Critical thinking, process, and organizational skills with thorough attention to detail, but discernment between what is critical vs. interesting

  • Ability to develop critical insights and make strategic recommendations based upon relevant metrics

  • Structured project management (time, team, and work-stream's management)

  • Ability to deliver time-pressured projects on-time and with the highest (error-free) quality

  • Ability to identify key operational performance drivers and flexibility to support clients with a broad array of issues

  • Core accounting knowledge and impacts of risk on financial and operational results

  • Flexible and creative thinking

  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Insurance / Risk Management, Business Administration, or other relevant degree with a preference for advanced education including MBA, JD or other

  • 15 + years of previous related risk management, insurance brokerage, underwriting and coverage or consulting

  • CPCU, ARM, CIC or other professional designations preferred

  • Strong insurance marketplace relationships

  • Significant knowledge of the Private Equity marketplace

  • Existing Private Equity and Global 2000 relationships a plus (personal or professional);

  • Flexibility with respect to travel
