The Core Technologies Engineering (CTE) group within Intuitive has an immediate opening in Sunnyvale, CA, for a senior software engineer focusing on taking our robotic data streaming platforms to the next level of IoT ubiquity. A successful candidate must excel in a high-energy focused team environment, must have excellent communication skills, and must be able to balance independent production of results with the need to collaborate during planning, development, integration, and evaluation of research concepts and minimum viable products. The ability to learn existing systems rapidly and drive to creative-yet practical-solutions from rough requirements are essential in this position.
Core Responsibilities:
Envision and implement the future client interfaces to the robot's streaming data and build a client-side eco-system of microservices and processing pipelines to enable local/offline workflows as well as off-loading into our larger cloud based data pipeline
Partner with our simulation, software, robotics, and data teams to ensure that the solution you build can encompass all of their needs and make this solution the gold standard for data streaming at Intuitive Surgical.
Your work will be integrated into and supported on all intuitive products (Xi, X, SP, Ion, and all future products).
Your system will have good forward and backward compatibility and ensure robust cross-product testing and validation through deep integration into our CI/CD systems.
You will partner with other teams to help them build bespoke client applications for different groups inside and outside the company. The applications will range from customer-facing, internal/external research projects, engineering data logging, and 3rd party companies.
Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum 7+ years of software development experience. You ideally have a bachelor's or post-graduate degree in Computer Science, Math, or Engineering, but we will consider equivalent industry experience as well.
Strong experience building flexible re-usable API's for robotic, IoT, or large-scale distributed systems.
Strong in C++ and Python, some JavaScript/Node.js experience would also be great but is not required.
Experience building microservices using Python and FastAPI
Experience with various data serialization libraries and techniques. We use Protobuf in most places but are interested with your experience in GRPC, Thrift, Cap'n Proto, Avro, Parquet or MessagePack
Experience deploying microservices using Docker / Docker Compose to production environments
Experience implementing various pub/sub and streaming designs using message queues. Our systems currently use a combination of Kafka, ZeroMQ, TCP, UDP, web sockets and Crossbar, but we're looking for people comfortable with any or all of: RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, MQTT.
Familiarity in asynchronous programming, coroutines and asynchronous I/O frameworks (asyncio, twisted, autobahn) will be a plus.
