The Web & Social Media Specialist is responsible for publishing The College of Sciences information, stories, and marketing content on the web and distributing this content via social media and other digital channels. This position is the conduit through which the College of Sciences key messages reach audiences online. Specifically, this position serves as the lead in maintaining science.nd.edu and the College of Sciences social media, ensuring all these digital channels are dynamic, up to date, and consistently evolving in line with the Colleges priorities and the industrys best practices. Responsibilities include publishing content online and making updates to webpages in a timely manner, presenting content in compelling formats with engaging visuals, and distributing content in ways that maximize circulation and engagement. In addition to distributing content on social media, this position is responsible for producing content that is tailored specifically to social media such as photo galleries, simple graphics and quote cards, and short video clips. The Web & Social Media Specialist reports to the Senior Associate Director of Marketing Communications and works closely with the team to develop plans and strategies for communicating the Colleges priority messages to audiences online. This position also works with other College faculty (ex. center directors, department chairs) and staff who manage other websites under the science.nd.edu umbrella and need to communicate with audiences online, and with other members of the Marketing Communications Department who write stories and otherwise support the initiatives of the College of Science.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain science.nd.edu to ensure the website is dynamic, up to date, and consistently evolving in line with the Colleges priorities and the industrys best practices. These duties include: regular updates to webpages and directory entries; publishing event listings and stories; uploading assets; and planning larger changes and reorganizations as necessary. The Web & Social Media Specialist will monitor websites analytics to measure the success of the Colleges digital marketing strategies and campaigns.
Manage the Colleges social media accounts, including Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter. This management includes posting stories and event listings from science.nd.edu, sharing links to other news stories that mention the College of Science, creating live content such as photos or videos that show what is happening at the College on a given day, and creating additional content such as photo galleries, quote cards, and graphics that will increase the circulation of and engagement with our stories. Other staff members share the management of some of these accounts; the Web & Social Media Specialist ensures the accounts are being used in accordance with Notre Dames policies and brand standards.
Write news stories to post on science.nd.edu. On average, this will be one story every couple weeks and be a timely, straightforward news story as opposed to a longer feature.
Provide support to the College of Sciences secondary websites and subaccounts on social media. Websites include but are not limited to departments, centers, institutes, programs, and laboratories. The social media accounts may include departmental, centers & institutes, programs, that fall under the Science umbrella. Other staff members share the management of some of these accounts; the Web & Social Media Specialist ensures the accounts are being used in accordance with Notre Dames policies and brand standards.
This is not a technical job. While some knowledge of HTML code can be useful in this position, any necessary coding skills are something that a person in this role could learn through a small amount of online training. It is more important for the person in this position to understand the Colleges mission and priorities, be able to conceptualize methods for sharing content in compelling ways, and be able to organize the distribution of content in ways that make our social media, website, and other marketing collateral reinforce the Colleges priority messages.

3 to 4 years of professional marketing or similar experience
Experience using content management systems and operating social media for an organization. Understanding of digital marketing principles through academic coursework and/or on-the-job experience. Strong writing and grammatical skills, sharp attention to detail, and the demonstrated ability to manage a content calendar and other projects. Ability to be self-guided while also enjoying collaboration and teamwork. Appreciation for the Universitys mission.
