General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the worlds leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer / Analyst as part of the Engineering and Projects team in the Magnetic Fusion Energy Group. This position will join a team in the design, analysis, and fabrication of ITER plasma diagnostic measurement systems with an emphasis on laser, visible and IR imaging applications.

With limited direction, this position exercises considerable latitude for initiating and developing process, procedures, and techniques for finite element analyses to justify structural integrity of mechanical component, assembly, and system designs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for design / structural integrity justification of engineering designs using finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis tools.

  • Creates finite element models of various parts and systems to analyze problems in thermal, thermo-fluids, electro-magnetic, and multi-physics environments.

  • Performs finite element models for various environments to verify design feasibility in structural, thermal, shock and vibrational domains, and performs analytical studies for analyzing the mechanisms of kinematics, dynamics, and force analysis.

  • Provides stress and structural support to design and engineering groups based on given geometry models.

  • Reviews project-related analysis results to ensure accuracy.

  • Interprets analysis results and converts them to design suggestions.

  • Investigates opportunities to limit required testing and reduce certification costs with FEA analysis.

  • Documents findings, communicates results to engineering staff, management and customer through technical presentations and reports.

  • Supports strategic planning and deployment of computer-aided engineering analysis tools and processes and acts as subject matter expert to assure quality in design and develop capability within the Division.

  • Works within a diverse, multidisciplinary team environment with varying skill sets.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; fifteen or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, thirteen or more years of experience with a masters degree, or ten or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.

  • Must have familiarization and understanding with engineering standards and structural design codes such as ASME Section III. Familiarization with ITER Structural Design Criteria for In-vessel Components (SDC-IC) desirable.

  • Must have expert-level experience with FEA software packages and analysis tools such as ANSYS. Types of analysis includes transient Multiphysics electromagnetic, thermal, structural analysis, CFD (Fluent), EM field (Maxwell), shock (SRS), and random vibration analysis.

  • Experience and understanding in the principles of Opto-Mechanical engineering is desired.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. This includes creating, working to, and maintaining budgets and schedules.

  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one or more engineering areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on component projects.
