The Department of Physics has an outstanding opportunity for for a part-time (60%) Research Scientists/Engineer 3 performing single molecule biophysics in the departments nanopore group.
This NIH-NHGRI-funded research focuses on improving nanopore DNA sequencing through deeper understanding of molecular motors such as helicases and polymerases. This position will be located in Seattle, Washington.
The Research Scientist/Engineer 3 will work under limited supervision of the PI and play a leading role in the operation of this research. Key responsibilities of the position will include: organizing the operations of the experiment, personnel and monitoring hardware in the laboratory. The work will be performed in close collaboration with faculty, lab technicians and students. To be successful in this position, the candidate must be highly motivated with a track record of productive research, exemplified by publications and presentations, and willing to work in a highly collaborative, open environment. This position is suited for someone who enjoys scientific writing, mastering new skills, multi-tasking and working in a team environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee statistical data analysis and collection of new data. 25%
Design of new experiments involving new DNA/RNA architectures and site-directed mutagenesis of motor enzymes. 25%
Lead in development, design, and validation of data collection and analysis tools.25%
Produce reports of research results and other pertinent information in the form of publications and public presentations. 10%
Oversee UW graduate students and undergraduate students within the laboratory. 10%
Perform related duties as required. 5%
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Ph.D. degree in Physics plus 1 year experience working in a research lab.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge and experience with Matlab software, git versioning software.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Strong understanding of single-molecule enzyme kinetics, bioinformatics, and statistical analysis.
