Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Software Engineer to help develop and maintain a suite of MATLAB-based software applications for mission planning and flight operations of NASAs Chandra spacecraft. The Chandra X-ray Observatory, launched in 1999, is one of NASAs Great Observatories and its science impact spans nearly every domain in astrophysics, from cosmology and fundamental physics to the impact of stellar flares on the habitability of exoplanets. These science returns arise from Chandras unique and essential capabilities sub-arcsecond spatial resolution and high spectral resolution which has no peer in X-ray astrophysics and no replacement on the horizon. (NASA Astrophysics Advisory Committee 2022 Senior Review report, p. 2)
The Northrop Grumman Flight Operations Team operates the Chandra spacecraft from the Operations Control Center in Burlington, MA. The team uses a variety of software to develop observation plans, execute real-time supports, analyze spacecraft performance, and prepare for future activities. A large portion of this software is MATLAB-based and is designed around a number of mission-specific graphical user interfaces.
The selected candidate will become part of the small Software section of the Flight Operations Team. The applicant should be a motivated self-starter who is able to design, implement, and test new software functionality both independently and in close collaboration with peers, users, and customers. Tasking will initially be focused on implementing new features, expanding unit and regression test infrastructure and coverage, responding to user requests, upgrading to new versions of MATLAB and Python, integrating peer and customer code, and performing general maintenance and development of the codebase. Responsibilities are expected to expand over time to cover other software and systems that support Chandra Flight Operations.
Telecommute options may be available.
